Gary Puckett & The Union Gap

No, me neither.  I only know one of their songs – through it’s own notoriety.

Many years ago a song began to play on the radio and within a minute, two of us were sat staring at each other in disbelief and questioning if what we were listening to was what we thought it was.  It’s a moment we still talk about now.

No, I’m not talking about ‘Bachelor Boy’, ‘The Millenium Prayer’, ‘ Daddy’s Home‘ or any other vomit-inducing offering from Cliff ‘not me guv’ Richard.  No, the song in question is ‘Young Girl‘ which was written by Jerry Fuller.  It was released in 1968 by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap and hit number 2 in the USA charts and reached the number 1 spot in the UK charts.  It was re-released in the UK in 1974 and reached number 6, so clearly there were quite a few people who liked it.  Probably one of Jimmy Savile’s favourites….

The song is written from the aspect of an older man who realises he has fallen in love with a girl under the age of consent and asks her to leave before he changes his mind and… well… read a synopsis from The Portland Mercury in 2012 that says it all:

FORBIDDEN UNDERAGE LOVE—Gary Puckett and the Union Gap: “Young Girl” (1968)

Statutory rape is a disturbingly familiar scenario for pop songs, but one of the creepiest of all time has got to be Gary Puckett’s “Young Girl.” Written by producer Jerry Fuller, its refrain declares, “My love for you is way out of line/Better run, girl/You’re much too young, girl.” He is literally telling her to escape his Humbert-like clutches before he commits the crime of intercourse with her. (Again.) Lyrical gems like, “Though you know that it’s wrong to be alone with me/That come-on look is in your eyes,” weren’t enough to keep this song from reaching number 2 on the charts, and Puckett—who grew up in Yakima, Washington—has been singing this song more or less every night since. Puckett turns 70 this year. Creepy.

Young Girl

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl
With all the charms of a woman
You’ve kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you’re old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl
Beneath your perfume and your make-up
You’re just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it’s wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes
Young girl, get out my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run girl
You’re much too young girl.
The fact that this song has been covered by other artists and the singer has dined out on it for decades says more about the music industry than anything else!  It simply needs to be consigned to the Top Shits Parade and left there, along with anything by Gary Glitter. Seriously.
